Sweet treats set Cheryl on path to success
Life is sweet for cake decorator Cheryl Betts. Days after launching her new business she is already finding a huge interest in her cake creations.
Cheryl decided to make the most of social media and launched a Facebook page for her new venture ‘Celebration Cakes Marske’ – and was astonished to see it gain hundreds of friends and new business enquiries almost immediately.
“I’ve been decorating cakes for more than 15 years and taught myself to do it originally,” she said. Since learning icing and decoration techniques, Cheryl has been working as a cake decorator with a local baker, but decided earlier this year that she was ready to set up her own business.
Cheryl’s shop can be found on Eastfield Road, Marske where she will decorate cakes for all occasions, from weddings and christenings to children’s birthdays.
“Cakes for children are extremely popular – I do anything and everything, because people just look on my site and choose from there. Noddy and Fireman Sam are always high up the list!”
Cheryl received help and advice from Redcar and Cleveland’s Enterprise Team to start up the business.
“They’ve helped me with absolutely everything from marketing to dealing with the Inland Revenue
“I’ve been on five courses with them, and every one has been brilliant – at times, I haven’t been sure if running my own business is a good idea, but I always come away from the Enterprise Team feeling incredibly positive.”
She is already getting bookings months ahead from prospective clients, who are recommending her to friends.
“It certainly looks as though there’s a big demand in the area for decorated cakes, and it’s very exciting to be running my own business.”
