Domanic Gokool

Soccer coach Domanic Gokool is getting a real kick out of running his own business with the help of the Redcar and Cleveland Enterprise team.

Youngsters at Sleights Primary School are among the first to enjoy the activities organised by 4-4-2 Soccer and Sports, with Wednesday afternoon PE sessions and an after-school club.

Domanic’s embryo business is also providing an after-school club for Years 3 and 4 at Egglescliffe School to convince the 31-year-old from Loftus that he’s made the right decision.

“I feel I’ve made a good reputation in coaching so I was confident, although it was still scary. The question is always, is it going to work?

“That’s why the Enterprise Team has been so helpful. They ease you into it. They know you’re diving in at the deep end so they make sure you know what you’re letting yourself in for. They don’t want you to fail.”

Domanic is hoping to offer a sports coaching apprenticeship to 18-year-old Shaun Todd, who has already been working alongside him and he’s has had help from work placement student Daniel Bowman from Leeds University.

Domanic, who still plays Sunday League football, can look back over eight years of coaching, including a highly successful spell with Loftus Juniors FC, managing youngsters as they moved from under 10s to under 16s.

That spell involved a variety of outside jobs, from a fork lift truck driver to a milk delivery man – even though he’s allergic to milk! He made his move into coaching as a full-time role with another sports school over three years ago.

Domanic added: “I’ve reached a point now where I’ve been a head coach and there’s nowhere else to go but to be the boss! That’s the next step.”

He admits his childhood inspiration was Liverpool’s Kenny Dalglish and said: “To be honest, I’ve always wanted to be a football manager or coach. Liverpool are my team.

“I love coaching the youngsters, the children at Sleights are fantastic. Now the plan is to aim to add an hour every half term. We’ve already achieved that so far so we’re right on target.”
