British businesses should look for funding outside the banking sector, Business Secretary Vince Cable has said, marking the latest effort to generate growth among small-and medium-sized businesses.

Faced with a barely growing economy, the government has targeted smaller companies as a major source of growth and has introduced reforms to encourage start-ups and make it easier for existing businesses to expand.

“Britain’s businesses cannot grow, export and innovate without proper access to bank credit. But they also need alternatives when looking for finance,” said Mr Cable. “The government wants to see a shift in the market structure towards non-bank lending.”

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, supported by mima and the Arts Council has created an opportunity for an experienced visual artist to undertake a 12-month residency in Redcar commencing in the spring of 2013.

An attractive package will be offered to the successful artist including studio space in Redcar’s latest visitor attraction and iconic seafront landmark – Redcar Beacon.

The Trade and Investment Team within the British Embassy in Brussels is organising a showcase of Britain’s high end quality products in home accessories and gifts at the prestigious refurbished British Ambassador’s Residence located in central Brussels. This event will take place on 12^th June starting at 5pm and will be hosted by the British Ambassador, Jonathan Brenton.

This is an opportunity not to be missed, whether you are already doing business in the Benelux market or you are a novice exporter, this is a unique opportunity to present your products to a targeted audience of Belgian importers, retailers, press and high profile businessmen.

Additionally, for novice exporters, you will get the chance to get a feel of the market and to meet with potential importers as well as shops and galleries. It also provides a platform for British companies already exporting to Belgium to bring their products to the attention of potential new customers; this can be done in collaboration with their dealer in Belgium.

Marketing of the event

The UKTI team within the Embassy in Brussels will be organising the event and we will:

Mail shot to a targeted list of importers/shops/galleries for the afternoon event. The invitation will include full details of your products including a picture and link to website.
Mail shot to journalists covering the lifestyle sector in both general press and magazines
Dedicated web pages on both the Embassy and UKTI websites

Programme of the day

12 June:

Arrive in Brussels and proceed to British Residence for set up

17.00 till 19.00: showcase open to importers/shops/galleries and the press, formal opening by the Ambassador

18.30: Networking reception with wide range of decision makers

Costs and methods of payment

The overall participation fee for the event will be £392.50. This includes a £100 charge to cover the hire of the venue, security and hire of equipment. But also £292.50 OMIS charge (Overseas Market Introduction Service) which covers the following:

Drawing up of lists of suitable guests, importers, retailers, galleries, press
Printing and mailing of the invitations
Inclusion in the participants’ catalogue ( companies will be asked to provide logo/picture, contact details and short write up)
UKTI publicity including press releases and show report on the UKTI and British Embassy website
Manning the registration desk
Help in setting up
Presence of the Ambassador

This is a discounted rate on the standard fee (£585) which is available IF you register before 15 March 2013.

Please note that the above does not include travel and accommodation costs. However, you might be eligible for a travel grant of £200; but you need to discuss this with your local International Trade Adviser. (See below)

The OMIS fee is to be paid through the OMIS system, your ITA will be able to help you with this. The £100 have to be paid to:
