Redcar school Sowing seeds for the future

School gardens and allotments are proving to be a valuable source of hands on health and environmental education in Redcar and Cleveland, whilst at the same time developing new enterprise initiatives.

The success of these enterprises paid off for Redcar Community College in March when they won the ‘Most Enterprising Project’ award for their Enterprise Community Garden business, at Showcase 09 held at Redcar Racecourse.
As part of the prestigious awards ceremony highlighting the enterprising people and companies within the borough, one of the awards was specific to education.

Since their achievement, they have continued to enjoying great success with their new gardening venture thanks to the support and expertise of Redcar and Cleveland Enterprise team (LEGI).
Due to everyone’s hard work, students at Redcar Community College are now planting new fruit bushes, vegetables and plants which they can replenish while their extended school services, Compass, have also involved the local community with the students to tend to the gardens.
This has interacted older groups of adults who can now use the allotments with younger students who are using them.
Jean Brooks of the Colleges Compass Centre extended Services said:
“A lot of local people from the community who had been waiting for allotments, are now able to use ours. We have even got our own club and are having our first club meeting this week where year seven children have invited people in from the Community. It’s a very mixed audience of young and old.”

 “It’s a delight to see the children going off to work with their lunch boxes and enjoying the work in the gardens.
This approach of mixing adults and students has been a huge success and has proved to be very beneficial to all age groups who have interacted well and learned so much about one another.
