School enterprise is a great success!
Redcar & Cleveland’s Enterprise Team (LEGI) are offering innovative schemes to introduce school children to the world of business.
The Enterprise team has been busy getting both parents and children involved in schemes throughout the region. In the past year the Enterprise Team has developed 18 businesses within schools and trained over 50 teaching staff in specific areas of enterprise. A staggering 1800 students have been involved in enterprise activities in Redcar and Cleveland supported by the Enterprise Team. With much more in the pipeline.
The Enterprise Team plan to continue developing more curriculum related enterprise programmes within schools, encourage more teaching staff to undertake enterprise training and ensure every student is aware of the benefits that enterprise can have for them.
The Enterprise Teams involvement starts with children in Primary School because they feel it is never too young to encourage entrepreneurial skills. Two of their greatest success stories have been, the ‘Family Market’ and ‘Community Gardens and Orchards’.
The Community Gardens and orchards is a revolutionary scheme allowing children to run gardens / allotments at their schools as small, but real businesses. The scheme gives children a practical and unique look at enterprise which is sure to benefit their education in many ways. The gardens take on a variety of formats with some being run by the school for its own benefit while others involve parents and the local community.
Another impressive Primary School initiative is the ‘Family Market’.
The Enterprise team, alongside the Adult learning services are arranging an event spanning over May and June which will raise awareness of self employment, marketing and product development. The programme focuses on families selling their own products on market stalls. The aim is to give children an insight into various factors involved with running a business with added fun for the children’s enjoyment.
Other exciting projects extend to Key Stages Three and Four where they have given students the opportunity to create their own radio station. With training and coaching from TFM radio the ‘Listen Loud’ scheme currently has 4 radio stations in schools with a further 2 on the way. The programme is proving to be very popular with students who are finding the experience beneficial.
The Enterprise teams Education team is really making a difference and is well on the way to developing a vibrant enterprise culture with the future generations of Redcar and Cleveland.
