Saltburn’s Burrito Bus hits the road
A new, unique business venture has been undertaken by a Saltburn woman who owns her very own ‘Burrito Bus’.
The clue is in the name and Sarah Hill, formerly an interior architect in London, is turning her passion into a business; selling authentic Tex/Mex food – and she insists that quality is guaranteed. The Burrito Bus travels to food fairs and markets, corporate events, a range of parties, and even caters for weddings.
After receiving funding from LEGI (Local Enterprise Growth Initiative) which helped to supply equipment for the bus, Sarah and her husband, Mark, have recently taken the Burrito Bus to Richmond Live and Coastal Flavours of Whitby, both of which were a success and found customers coming back for more of the tasty Mexican cuisine.
All the meat that Sarah uses is local, fresh ingredients which is house cooked. She uses genuine Mexican spices that are cooked for hours, a variation of meat; cheese; guacamole; salad and makes her own fried beans.
Sarah said: “There are lots of people doing burgers and we wanted to do something completely different. I’m a very passionate cook and I’ve been into food since I was very young. I love food and love feeding people! It’s a brilliant feeling to have got such positive feedback.”
Sarah, who recently won a Tourism and Hospitality award for her business plan from Teesside University, got hooked on Mexican food whilst living in America, and after realising there was a gap in the market for this kind of catering of such quality, her and Mark decided to sell their house and buy the bus.
Sarah said: “Ideally, I would like to have more than one vehicle and have people working for me eventually. It would also be nice to have a building and develop a really good reputation for great food.”
Sarah has also been awarded five stars by the Food Hygiene Environmental Health to go with her Teesside University accolade.
She said: “To receive these is brilliant. It was lovely to win the [Teesside University] award and I met lots of interesting people who run their own businesses. Everybody was very supportive and I won £500 which bought more equipment for the bus.”
